Google Ads account currency: how to choose it and what to do when entering a new market

In short

A Google Ads account’s currency and time zone are set permanently when it’s created. Choose the currency you pay and count money in for that market, and remember that the available payment methods depend on it. A market with a different currency needs a new account — the history doesn’t carry over, but campaigns can be copied. It’s convenient to keep all accounts in one MCC structure.

Why the currency can’t be changed

Google’s help center puts it plainly: currency and time zone are set permanently when the account is created. Billing and reporting depend on them, so they can’t be changed later. If the currency doesn’t fit, there’s only one way out — a new account. It won’t inherit the history, but campaigns can be copied.

The only exception concerns manager accounts: Google can change their time zone once at an admin’s request, and only eastward. This doesn’t apply to ad accounts.

What depends on currency

  • Every amount in the account. Bids, budgets, costs and reports are all in the account currency.
  • Payment methods. According to Google’s help center, the available methods depend on country, currency and payment settings, and some work only with the country’s official currency. For example, Pix in Brazil requires BRL, and Banelco in Argentina requires ARS.
  • Consolidated invoice. If you combine invoices for several accounts, one invoice can only include accounts in the same currency.
  • Exchange losses. If you pay in one currency and the account is in another, the bank converts every payment.

How to choose the currency

  • Pay in the same currency you budget in. Otherwise spend in reports won’t match the money in your account.
  • For a local market, the local currency, if you plan to work there for a long time and pay with local methods.
  • For export and several markets, USD or EUR, if your budget is counted in them and you don’t pay with local methods.
  • For several markets, use several accounts — one per currency.

An exporter from Asia selling to the US USD
A store in several eurozone countries EUR
An app with a dollar budget for many countries USD, an account per country

Time zone

Time zone matters as much as currency. It drives ad schedules, daily budgets and day boundaries in reports. If the account is on London time but your customers are in Mexico, “morning” in the schedule will be night for buyers. Set the time zone of the market the account serves.

Entering a new market

  1. Create a separate account for the country with its currency and time zone.
  2. Put it in the same MCC structure as the rest — for example, in the region’s Sub-MCC.
  3. Copy or create campaigns with the local schedule and language in mind.
  4. Top up the balance in the right currency and track spend separately from the old market.

More on structure in “MCC and Sub-MCC”.

Common mistakes

  • Currency “same as the last account”. An account for Brazil in EUR cuts you off from local methods like Pix.
  • The office’s time zone instead of the market’s. Schedules and daily budgets shift by several hours.
  • One account for every country. Spend by country gets mixed up, and the currency suits only some markets.

How not to lose on conversion

Keep separate balances in each currency and transfer between them deliberately, seeing the amount upfront. In the Gads dashboard each currency has its own balance, and transfers between accounts are instant.

Can I change the currency if I made a mistake?
No. You’ll have to create a new account in the right currency. It won’t inherit the history, but campaigns can be copied.
Can I change the time zone?
Not in a regular ad account — it’s also set permanently. There’s an exception only for manager accounts, and even that has limits.
What currency does Google show bids and budgets in?
